You've probably heard it on the news ... The concrete stop. What does it mean and what are the consequences?
According to an article on Immoweb, the concrete stop means that from 2040 houses can only be built within a space that has already been occupied. From 2040, no more space may be taken up. Open spaces must remain 'green'. You can still build on a built-up plot or a plot that is paved. So in the future we will live closer together and more above each other.
Why has a concrete stop been introduced?
Nowhere in Europe is so much land taken up than in Flanders. This causes an enormous fragmentation of public space, which is not good for biodiversity and congestion. Flanders literally gets stuck.
What about Wallonia then?
There too, the government wants to implement a stop from 2050 and half densification by 2025. This will be quite a challenge, because the population figures continue to increase in Wallonia.
However, it does not mean that you have to put away your building dream.
