Impact of the orientation and location of your property

Something you should pay attention to when you want to buy a home or building land is the orientation and location of your home. These play an important role in the energy performance.

Orientation

If you are looking for a building plot or house, opt for a piece of land without high buildings or tall trees on the south side. The sun can provide 20-60% of the energy. This is also called passive solar energy.

Location

If your home is located around many facilities such as stores, schools, work, ... then this not only benefits your social life but is also better for the environment, because then you need your car less.

Sunny in the south, cold in the north

Bedrooms, garages, storage rooms and other rooms where you spend the least time are best located on the north side and living rooms on the south side. This way you will use the least energy. It is also best for the longest side of your house to face south.

If possible, provide many glass surfaces on the south side (preferably super-insulating glass).

Tips

  • To let in as much heat as possible in the winter and avoid the heat in the summer, it is best to plant deciduous trees. They provide shade in summer and let in maximum light in winter.

  • Awnings (e.g. a screen or an awning) keep out the summer sun

  • A roof overhang lets in the low winter sun and keeps out the high summer sun
