If you are planning to build or buy a home, you can opt for a house with a pitched or a flat roof. We list a few facts for you.
Advantages of a flat roof
- A flat roof ensures that you gain space on the inside (because with a pitched roof, more space is lost due to the sloping walls).
- A flat roof is easier to install than a pointy roof, so it is also cheaper, because there is less work and you need less material.
- If you want to leave the option open to build an additional storey, then it is also best to opt for a flat roof.
- If you have a flat roof, it also gives you the option of turning it into a nice roof terrace or a green roof, namely a roof covered with plants. This is good for the environment and also has an extra insulating effect.
Advantages pitched roof
- A pitched roof ensures that rain can run off more easily than a flat roof. Consequently, there are fewer leaks and you save on repairs.
- A pitched roof can be better insulated than a flat roof.
- A pitched roof requires less maintenance than a flat roof. There are more puddles on it and there is more moss formation. With a pitched roof, for example, you have the occasional problem of tiles shifting but that cost is smaller.
- A pitched roof is durable. Tiles last very long while a flat roof needs replacing after about thirty years.
