Tips for a fire-safe home
Unfortunately, there have been many disturbing reports in the media recently about house fires. So it's important to give some thought to what you need to be aware of to keep your home fireproof.
We list a number of points for consideration:
1) Switch off electrical appliances
A fire is often caused by
- short-circuit due to badly insulated wires
- defective sockets
- overloading of electrical cables
Tips
- Do not place flammable materials near appliances that give off heat.
- Do not leave appliances on when you leave the house.
- Unplug the cable from the wall socket if an appliance is charged
- Don't leave the washing machine/dryer running when you are not at home
- Check the state of your electricity installation once a year and turn off the electricity before you start extinguishing fires.
2) Smoke detectors
Since 1 January 2020, it is compulsory in Flanders to have at least one smoke detector in your home.
We strongly recommend installing more than one smoke detector. Be careful with smoke detectors in the kitchen, bathroom or garage, they can give false alarms. So don't hang your smoke alarm in the kitchen, for example, too close to the dining table or stove.
3) Escape plan
It is best to think of an escape plan with your co-occupants. You practice this at work or at school, so why not in your own home?
For example, think about the following things:
- Where do you put all the keys/who takes them?
- Who will call the fire department?
- Who will take the children if necessary?
- Think of 2 escape routes per room.
- Agree where to meet again if you have fled
4) Be careful with fire
Indoors, every resident comes into contact with fire from time to time. Be sure to pay attention to the following:
- Be careful with the deep fryer and microwave.
- Turn off your stove after cooking and do not put towels or other flammable items nearby
- Be careful with gas bottles
- Be careful with candles, never leave them burning when you leave the house
- Be careful with matches
- Keep children away from electrical outlets
5) Fire prevention advisor
You can have a fire prevention consultant come by to check your home and make a plan of what it is best to do to make your home fire safe.
6) Fire blanket and fire extinguisher
If you don't already have it in your home, it's a good idea to purchase a fire blanket and fire extinguisher.
